The Heart of Paper Piecing

Have you ever admired a quilt with sharp points, perfect seams, and stunning symmetry and wondered how it was done? The secret often lies in a quilting technique called paper piecing.

This creative method has transformed the quilting world, allowing quilters to achieve incredible precision and detail in their designs.

As a Certified Quiltworx Instructor, I’ve seen firsthand how paper piecing can boost confidence, accuracy, and the overall joy of quilting.

What Is Paper Piecing?

Paper piecing, also known as foundation piecing, is a quilting technique where fabric pieces are sewn directly onto a printed paper pattern.

The paper acts as a guide, helping you align seams and points with perfect accuracy. This makes it easier to achieve precise shapes and designs something that’s often tricky with traditional piecing methods.

Once the quilt block is complete, the paper foundation is carefully removed, leaving you with clean, crisp results.

Why It’s a Game-Changer

Paper piecing isn’t just another quilting method it’s a total game-changer for quilters of all levels. Here’s why:

Precision Made Easy
The printed foundation gives you an exact guide for sewing, which means your seams, angles, and points stay perfectly aligned every time. It removes guesswork and helps reduce fabric waste.

Perfect for Complex Designs
Those stunning Quiltworx patterns with intricate shapes and layers become easier to tackle. Paper piecing helps you create complex blocks that look professional even if you’re new to quilting.

Builds Confidence for Every Quilter
Beginners love how forgiving this method is, while experienced quilters enjoy the level of control it provides. Each project feels more achievable and a lot more fun.

Tips for Success with Paper Piecing

Like any quilting technique, paper piecing takes a little practice but with the right approach, you’ll be amazed at how quickly your skills improve. Here are a few helpful tips to get started:

• Use high quality foundation paper, parchment-style paper, or newsprint for easy removal.
• Keep your stitch length short (between 1.8 and 2.0) this makes it easier to remove the paper later without damaging your seams.
• Use a size 70 Microtex Sharp needle on your sewing machine.
• Use a high-quality thread (such as Aurifil), size 50 or 60 weight.
• Start your stitching 2–3 stitches before the start of the solid line and end 2–3 stitches after the end of the solid line. This allows all threads to be trimmed off neatly as you go, creating a beautiful back on your quilt.
• Leave the foundation papers on the individual units until you’re ready to assemble your quilt top. This helps maintain stability and keeps track of which unit is which.
• Trim as you go to prevent bulky layers and uneven edges.
• Take your time with each step and enjoy the process, quilting is all about patience and creativity!

Remember, quilting isn’t just about finishing fast; it’s about creating something beautiful, one stitch at a time.
